Geared Up

Groceries are bought and portioned out (including making my own salad mix, cause I ain't paying like $5 for something pre-packaged that is more likely to go bad faster than putting it together myself), and meals are planned for the week. Workouts are also planned.

I downloaded Insanity. *gulp* No, wait, erase that and replace it with *yay!* cause I am not getting into the mindset that I can't do it. I can do it. I am strong (or will be!). With my freelance job gone, I have time for these workouts, and at like 45 mins a piece (or shorter) that's as much time as I would spend in the gym anyway. Trying to convince my bf to join me. He's in IT, so that should give you some indication of his musculature :) Don't get me wrong, the guy is small (aka, not chubby or anything)...but I can also pin him down and hold him with like one of my legs...so he could use some resistance training :) Uphill battle, but I'm trying.

It's time to be serious and to actually follow through with something! I have quit EVERYTHING I have ever tried...including WW. That isn't going to get me anywhere. I am getting a lot of inspiration from other bloggers, the WW boards, and this one friend on my FB who is a fitness nut. I love seeing her status updates. I want to be able to brag about my success, so I am going to do it.

Tomorrow is the Insanity fit test. Yes it looks killer (especially the move where you squat and then jump up into the air and slap your knees, that honestly may kill me), but I have done very similar things. This is all body weight, with a lot of intervals, heavy on the cardio, something I need. I have to do this...I need to do this. For me, finally, to not be so afraid of the success that can come when you actually put your mind to something and follow through.

Wish me luck :)

New Year...

2012....weird. I am also one more year closer to that dreaded 3-0 (rapidly leaving the "late twenties" I have listed here). I REFUSE to enter that very very scary place (aka, outside of my 20s) not at goal. Weight loss just gets harder with age. Don't really want to keep delaying my success.

I had already made the plan/commitment before Christmas to get it back together. It was working. I was making the time (for exercise at least). In a recap about the gym, I found out that they sold me pre-fabricated sessions (hence the treatment I got when speaking to the trainers etc.) They also refused to honour my sessions as customizable sessions. So I asked for a refund. Except, now I feel as if I am labeled as the "difficult customer" whenever I walk in there. I basically told the personal training manager that she was a judgemental b*tch when I had my meeting with her, so whenever I see her, I just have this feeling that she's rooting for my failure so that she'd feel as though she was right (in telling me that their way was the only way). I need to move gyms. Except there's no women's only close by. I just have to get over it I guess, but it's still uncomfortable.

In other news, I quit my freelance job. I only made about $300 extra per month. I don't even want to know how much money I spent eating out because of this job and the lack of time because of it. I figured it wasn't worth my energy anymore. Especially considering what it was doing to my home life (pretty sure my bf was starting to forget what I looked like), and what it was doing to my more lucrative second job at a college. So with regret (I did enjoy it and the people), I quit yesterday and it feels great. I am so looking forward to either hitting the gym next Monday and then coming home and cooking a healthy dinner for my bf and I, or coming straight home, maybe doing a workout video and then dinner...all likely before 7/8 pm! It's craziness I tell you!!

I have also bought a fitness and diet journal, and I am committing to the 17 Day Diet. Bad name, actually sensible premise. It's all about jump starting your body and basically doing a cleanse for 17 days (by cleanse I mean healthy, clean eating, no grains, processed food etc, nothing crazy there), and then 2 more 17 day cycles that gradually give you back some of the good carbs and widen your food base. I am taking 2012 as the year to get over my fear of vegetables. People constantly tell me that sushi takes getting used to. I am going to try very very hard to use this mentality with vegetables. No more assuming I don't like something. I am also going to try playing with seasonings...garlic does wonders!! My mom gave me a low carb (not no carb!!) cookbook in my Christmas stocking...it has some very tasty options in there that are well balanced. So does the 17 day diet. It's really about sensible eating.

I might also try WW meetings again. I don't know if I can really afford it (just found out I now make too much (pshaw!!) to qualify for repayment assistance on my student loans and now have to start giving them money :( ), because the support is amazing. But I've also never really given the online thing a chance. And since you can now get lifetime online like in meetings, maybe it's worth it to pay a bit more attention.

I've tracked solidly for 2 days, and I am happy to be moving forward. Grocery shopping this weekend. Meal planning tonight. Bring it on!

Update

Well I never posted on the day I said I would. I have a problem with commitment...oops. Anyway, to recap...I am hitting the gym about 3 times per week. I'd love it to be 4, so I am slowly working on that. However, and this is a confession...my eating sucks. Big time. I track intermittently, and I have "treats" way more often than I should.

So I have made the time for exercise, but not so much for proper food, and food is soooo essential when doing weight loss. I could work out all I want, but if I'm having take out 3 times a day, that ain't gonna matter too much.

A lot of it goes back to my old nemesis time, but that is also an excuse to eat the food that I still really enjoy. However, I don't know how much of it is enjoyment, or addiction. I have some serious hang ups about food that are not being resolved. I think it's almost time I take a good look at the benefits package I have and see if counselling is covered. In the New Year perhaps, not to bring in resolutions here (as a rule I don't really do resolutions).

On another note, I have my first personal training session next week, and this next bit is going to be a bit of a rant. I've had PT before...several times in fact. It's great. If it wasn't so damn expensive, I'd do it more often. Anyway, when I signed up at Goodlife I explained to the girl that I have an insane schedule, and that I could only commit to PT once per week. Since I work freelance 3-4 times per week, this was all I could commit to. She said fine. In order to fulfill the contract, I would have to finish my sessions within 6 weeks. 6 sessions...once per week...6 weeks. Easy.

I get a call from the PT manager and I remind her that I can only do once per week. She starts going on about how it's really supposed to be twice per week. Excuse me, a) these are supposed to be customized for me and my schedule, and b) this is what I was promised when I joined. Then she told me that it's for my benefit (which I don't deny), to help get me into the gym and set up a routine. I asked her, did you even read my file? I am not new to fitness, nor to PT. Did you read the notes that mentioned my schedule and my desire for once per week? Obviously not. That conversation ends and a couple days later I get a call from a personal trainer. She also starts going on about it being twice per week. I understand that it's for maximum results, but I'm not looking for the fast and the furious right now. I want a routine that I can do on my own, designed for my goals and body. I know enough to take it away and tweak it as needed.

She basically told me that if I only do it once per week that'd it be a waste of time, and that I shouldn't expect results and that if I didn't do it her way, there is no way I'd be successful. I realise I am chubby now, and have gained some weight back, but I did not lose 40lbs by accident. I told her that this wasn't going to work out and the next time I went to the gym I lodged a complaint. I don't want to be treated that way for a service that is supposed to be fit to me, and something that I paid a lot of money for!

I got a resolution with the gym person, and agreed to try another trainer. An experienced one who is just starting at my club. I reiterated to the PT manager again my schedule conflicts. What happens? The new personal trainer calls me and I have to go through the EXACT same thing with her! C'mon people!! You are providing a service that is supposed to be customizable...stop trying to put me in the box that everyone else is in! I know it's all about sales. They just want me done faster. That's BS and bad customer service. I'm paying you...you have to give me what I want. I work in sales and customer service...if my students come to me unhappy, I don't tell them that the only way they are going to learn English is to do my plan for them. I may advise them of a certain plan, but if that's not what they want, then so be it.

Rant over, but every time I talk to them I get mad all over again. Right when you think everyone is on the same page something else happens. Didn't put a good spin on my afternoon today.

On a lighter note...I did a killer like 1.5 hr work out today. Back to my Jillian Michaels Hot Bod in a Box (seriously, totally recommend, killer), and day 1 of week 3 of Couch to 5K. Just about died, and now I can't go up or down stairs, or you know, move :)

Then I had grilled talapia, veggies, and small potato for dinner, so I'm feeling good.

Now to focus on making the time for food...that's my next challenge.....have a good one!

Making Time...

This week, I have decided to have a theme. And this theme is going to be part of my weekly goals.

This week's theme? Making time. I have always overused the excuse that I don't have time...time for tracking, time for exercise, time for planning, time for cooking, time, time, time.

On Friday with my gym renewal I made the first step towards making time. How did I do this? Well, first I put on my big girl panties and sucked it up. Then I chose the solution that would work best with the very little time that I do actually have.

Monday through Wednesday, I am out of my house from 8:30 am until approximately 9:00 pm. In that time I work roughly 10-12 hours (two different jobs). What I wasn't utilising before was the break in between those jobs. I have at least an hour and a half between my regular job and my freelance job. Not only that, my freelance job is like a 2 minute walk away from my regular job. Why was I waiting until I got home to go to the gym? Under my old plan, that was the only way it would work because I had cancelled my gym membership when I bought my condo. Too expensive. I also started a new job and took a slight pay cut. Add that all up with monthly maintenance fees I pay to my building and I was gonna try and make the gym in my condo work.

It didn't work. Getting home at 9:00 pm and going to work out didn't work. I fooled myself for months thinking that I would do it. Or, if I didn't, that I would wake up early and work out then. Pshaw is all I have to say to that. I know myself, and that was just a farce. I would wake up in the middle of the night and think "oh my god, I am so tired, I can't get up early to work out!" and I'd switch my alarm to my regular one. Well, duh, of course I'm tired...it would be like 3 fricking am in the morning for crying out loud! Then I would argue with myself that well, I could go Thursday and Friday cause I have those nights free. Well, I was either exhausted by that point, or the gym was freaking busy. So in the end, nothing really happened.

Anyway, to get back on track, this whole gym in condo thing wasn't working, and I could no longer fool myself into thinking that it was working. It's not like I was getting smaller (bigger in fact). Also, I have begun to notice that when I am not working out, I pay less attention to what I am eating because it's like I've given up on taking care of myself.

So, to make a short story long, and to get back to my original point, the gym I joined (with a membership that gives me access to any Goodlife in Canada), is a mere block away from my work. I can work out AT LUNCH if I want to! That's huge (there are some cool looking classes that are only 30 minutes long). And since it's so close to my regular and freelance job, I can get something in between the two on Monday and Wednesday. And finally, since it's on the way home, what excuse do I have? None really.

This worked well for me before when I was at Goodlife last year, and my work was on the way. It's motivation, cause it's staring at you in the face on your way home. Hard to ignore that.

This is what I meant by making time. I have the class list. I am going to sit down and plan out at least 2 weeks. Anything more is asking a lot from someone who makes a plan to work out in the morning and wakes up at 3 am to change that plan. I can fit in my run and stretching between regular and freelance jobs, and for the other days, well, it's on the way home, staring me in the face.

This week is learning how to make my schedule work. I don't know how other people with crazy lives do it, but this is the way that I've come up with to do it for me.

I'll check back on Friday to post how it went. More than anything, this is about making the time for me, and what I need to be healthy and happy.

Gym Time

I re-joined Goodlife today. Not going to keep lying to myself about using the gym in my building. It doesn't seem to matter when I go...6:45 in the morning or 6:45 at night...it's always frickin busy! Totally a motivation killer!

So there's a women's only Goodlife like a block (or even half a block maybe) from my work. Walked in, signed up (corporate rate, thank you nice salesgirl), and 6 personal training sessions. I haven't had PT since the first time I signed up for a gym when I had no clue what I was doing. In the last couple years of my gym-ness, I've put together my own routines that are pretty challenging (ok, I had help from Jillian Michaels and Tommy Europe). But I am missing that kick in the pants as well as some help with my running program.

I made it a goal to be under 30 mins in the Harry Rosen Spring Run-Off 5K in April 2012 (why do I keep picking races that happen during cold weather??) Anyway...I can't keep starting and stopping and not getting anywhere. Tired of repeating things.

I am also excited to do some potential day time stuff. There are some great 30 minute lunch time classes that I could fit in. Looking forward to it :)

Other than that, the Moroccan comes home tomorrow! Very excited. Long 2 weeks. Time to get ready for my class tomorrow. Have a great weekend.

First week back OP

So...first week back. Did pretty well Monday-Friday. Lost 4.4 lbs. I know that most of that is water weight, but whatever...I'll take it.

Friday was when it started to unravel. I held a staff appreciation lunch for my admin and teaching staff. Catered sandwiches, salads, and 3...count em 3 desserts! I only supplied one of those, then two teachers each brought cake! I didn't want to offend either of them, so I took a small bit of each.

Anyway, it was like that lunch was the key to open the flood gates. I got Swiss Chalet for dinner....mmmmm, festive special! Saturday I had an egg and cheese mcmuffin and a double double. Lunch was chicken fingers and potato wedges. Dinner was pasta (tortellini) with chicken, with some Lays Kettle Chips (mesquite) thrown in for good measure as a snack. Oh, plus an orange crush. Today was a breakfast bagel...preogies (spelling), and some apple blossom thing. I feel so bloated and that I just wasted my first weekend back.

There is no longer any bad/tempting food in my house. Tomorrow I will stock up on fresh produce and decent grains. If I prep everything properly, there should be no more backsliding like this weekend.

I've heard this is common....falling apart on the weekends. Part of it is lack of routine. There is also that sense of relaxation and sense of entitlement. But here's the question...what do I feel entitled to eat bad food? Why is there no sense that I am entitled to work out and feel good about myself? What do I need to do to switch the trigger from food to other things? That is my constant struggle.

My goal for this week? Re-read/finish reading The Beck Diet Solution because it has a lot of great cognitive information it that was really helpful when I was looking at it last year. My issues are psychological (that's saying a lot eh??) so I am going to work through the Beck program and see what happens.

Now...for my real relaxation that doesn't involve food...bubble bath with my goats milk foam bath!! (oh, and you know how people say to take a bath to curb temptations cause you can't eat in the bath? Ya, that's not true...you can totally eat in the bath...not proud of it, but in my old life I've eaten everything from cookies to nachos (yes nachos) in the tub! Ugh. Hint? Hold the item over the edge so the crumbs don't land in the water...sigh...I hate that I know that!)

I'm off for a bubble bath sans food! Have a great Sunday!!

2nd day back at 'er

This is my second day back on the wagon. Doing well with tracking. I've also turned down some pretty big temptations...like a student giving me a Kinder Bueno bar for "Halloween". Maybe she misunderstood the holiday? Whatever, it was cute :) I tossed that thing so fast in my desk drawer it was like a lightening strike! Think I'm gonna have to somehow hide that thing in my co-worker's desk!

Exercise plan for tomorrow...will prep my food for tomorrow tonight. I am working till about 9 pm tomorrow, so I need two meals, or I need safe snacks till I get home and can make something more substantial. Though, that brings into question whether it's ok to eat dinner at 9 or 9:30 at night. I feel more "hunger satisfaction" when I eat my dinner when I get home. I find if I eat dinner at 5 or 6, I am really hungry by the time I get home. Could be psychological, or maybe I'm just not eating the right thing for dinner. I'll try it both ways.

My BF is once again in Morocco. Well, for the second time this year, lol. I say it like he's always taking off for Morocco. He just doesn't normally go more than once a year. It's Eid Al-Adha...their biggest holiday in the year. Then...for the first time EVER, he's coming home to BC with me for Christmas! Exciting. This is a little off-topic, but it's the first time in 4 years :)

Here's to an OP day tomorrow. Some challenges next week when I go on a business trip to Montreal and Ottawa, but I will tackle them the best I can.

Have a great week.
